About Saddleback Butte State Park
Saddleback Butte State Park encompasses 2,955 acres of pristine Mojave Desert landscape, dominated by the distinctive granite outcropping that gives the park its name. Located approximately 17 miles east of Lancaster, this desert oasis offers visitors an authentic wilderness experience in one of California's most unique ecosystems.
The park's centerpiece is Saddleback Butte itself, a 3,651-foot granite formation that rises dramatically from the desert floor. This ancient geological feature was formed millions of years ago and provides a challenging hiking destination with spectacular panoramic views of the Antelope Valley and surrounding mountain ranges.
Established in 1960, the park serves as a protected habitat for the western Mojave Desert's unique plant and animal communities.
